The common questions we’re asked about our first aid courses are listed below. If you can’t find an A to your Q, please email us your question and we’ll get back to you.
Most first aid certificates are valid for 3 years although you can retrain earlier if you need to refresh your skills. If you have an existing first aid qualification, our 3-hour online Annual Refresher is ideal for this. Our course pages detail how long each qualification is valid for.
We’re required to teach you for a specific number of hours on accredited first aid courses and you must attend the full course to get your qualification.
If you’re running late, please let your trainer know as soon as you can and when it’s safe for you to do so. You’ll find their number in your joining instructions. If you don’t have this info to hand, please call 0113 305 3143.
If you arrive late and we can’t catch you up on what’s been missed, we may need to reschedule your first aid training.
You need to pass several assessments to qualify as an accredited first aider. Practically, students are expected to bend, kneel, simulate CPR on a manikin and roll over a simulated casualty. When it comes to theory, students are expected to complete question papers which depending on the course, are usually provided electronically.
If you have any concerns or questions about completing these course assessments, please contact us before booking your training so we can run through your options. We’ll provide reasonable adjustments where our awarding organisations permit them, and we have to apply for these before you can train with us.
If a learner’s disabilities mean they are unable to achieve the required assessments with reasonable adjustments, they will not be able to qualify. If this happens, we’ll talk you through your options.
As most of our courses lead to regulated qualifications, we need to see some photo ID e.g. your driving licence or passport. Please bring this on the day along with a pen to complete your registration form.
You may not need to as you get a print copy of our first aid training manualon all our accredited courses which provides everything you need know about physical first aid. However, you’re welcome to use a pen and notebook if it suits your learning style.
First aid training – especially the practical stuff – is active work. We recommend supportive footwear and casual clothing that’s easy to bend, kneel and move about in – comfy trousers are a safe bet. As we keep our training rooms well ventilated, you may want to bring a fleece or jumper to wear, even when the weather’s good. And if you have long hair, bring something to tie it back. This isn’t essential but it makes CPR practice much easier!
If you’re booked on to our Outdoor Incident Management First Aid course, you’ll need a change of footwear and full waterproofs for the outdoor practical sessions as we train outside, whatever the weather.
We provide onsite first aid training for groups, subject to availability and a risk assessment of your workplace. If you don’t have the space at work for group training, we’ll run your course in our training room at Meanwood Valley Urban Farm at no extra cost. Please call 0113 305 3143 to find out more or drop us an email detailing the best times for us to call you.
You’re welcome to take our Annual Refresher first aid course every year between your main qualification. It’s a 3-hour, self-study course that’s updated when changes to first aid legislation and practice happen e.g. the current course covers COVID-adaptations for first aid including CPR
If you sign up to our newsletter, you’ll get any updates and changes to first aid practice, legislation and regulation delivered to your Inbox once a month.
All our courses involve reading and understanding PowerPoint presentations, training resources and participation in group discussions. You will need to recall information provided by your trainer to complete practical, verbal and written assessments. To successfully complete your first aid training, you need to be able to read, write and understand English.
