First Aid for Parents

The First Aid for Parents course was initially run by Helen for a few friends who were expecting their first baby and their families at their request. They were so reassured by the fact that they knew what to watch for, how to deal with everyday childhood illnesses/accidents, when to worry and when to seek medical help that it gave them confidence with their first child on the way.

The course has now been run for a number of groups through word of mouth (usually groups of Mums, but a few Dads and Grandparents have also attended) and the feedback is always a massive ‘thank you, now we feel confident that we could deal with something IF it occurs’. It is also suitable for other family members who may assist with childcare and babysitters. The course can be booked for a group (daytime or evening session). Helen is working on a virtual version to enable more people to access this – watch this space!

Questions are encouraged, and if there is another area of particular concern e.g., a child of one of the group has been diagnosed with asthma, we can also spend a little time on this. For this reason, the course timings can be flexible.

Recommended for: Parents, grandparents, extended family members; Babysitters; Playgroup / Sunday school leaders (where a parent is present – otherwise see note below regarding the Paediatric course)

PLEASE NOTE: This course is not suitable to meet the legal requirements for those with a duty of care who come under the Early Years Foundation Stage Practice Guidance for children aged 0-5 years i.e. childminders, nursery workers and primary school teachers; they need to complete the 12-hour Paediatric First Aid course.

Testimonials

In March I attended the children’s first aid course at Pudsey Surestart Centre. I found the course really helpful, especially as two weeks after my son developed a temperature and I noticed differences in his breathing. We took him to our local A&E department and after having a chest x-ray we found out he had pneumonia in his left lung and he was then in hospital for 10 nights. I just wanted to say a big thank you to your trainer as I felt the first aid course helped me a lot in looking for changes in breathing and temperature, and making the decision to take him to A&E (big sick!). I will definitely recommend the course to other parents.
Thank you again

I’ve just had the scariest experience of my life tonight when my 2 year old choked on a sweetie she’d pinched. Fortunately, due to the first aid refresher I’d had, I remembered what to do and managed to get it dislodged after about 30 seconds. Still shaking… but she’s OK and Dad’s a bit rattled… Having just been through this I reckon the more people we get trained in first aid the better.
Cheers,

- Jon
